Overhead Bridge Cranes- Helping Make Warehouses More Efficient
About Me
Overhead Bridge Cranes- Helping Make Warehouses More Efficient

Working in warehouses for most of my adult life, I was very familiar with overhead bridge cranes. These cranes are commonly used in warehouses, helping to transport large or heavy items from one side of the warehouse to the other. However, when I began working as a warehouse efficiency coordinator, I was surprised by how many smaller warehouses did not have these cranes. I created this website because I never realized that people who own warehouses don't own overhead bridge cranes or that they are not familiar with them. If you own a warehouse, I hope my website helps to teach you more about this piece of machinery and how it can make your business more efficient.

4 Safety Tips When Operating A Forklift

Olivia Chapman

If your business has forklifts to move loads of various sizes and weights around, whether it is a warehouse or construction site, certain safety measures must be taken to protect the driver of the forklift, and other workers in their general area. Here are some safety tips you should make sure all forklift operators are following.

Have a Strict Dress Code

Believe or not, the clothing your forklift operator wears does make a difference in their safety while operating the equipment. They must wear proper work gear, which includes clothing that is not too loose, as it can get caught on the equipment. They must also wear safety gear, including high-visibility jackets, safety shoes, gloves, and a hard hat. Gloves with friction are important because greasy hands lead to slipping off the controls.

Regularly Inspect the Equipment

Make it a habit for forklift operators to inspect and examine the equipment before they use it. It may seem tedious, but you can reduce work-related injuries by implementing this rule. A simple routine check doesn't take a long time, and allows them to examine the warning devices, steering, controls, and brakes. If they notice anything amiss, they should not operate it and should instead let management know.

Explain General Safety Operating Tips

There are some tips that most forklift operators already know, but refreshing their memory is still a good idea. For example, make sure they know they should always use the steps and hand grabs when entering and exiting the forklift. If you notice any operators skipping steps, jumping off, or not using the hand grabs, remind them of the importance of these safety measures. They must also be seating themselves correctly when in the equipment, and checking that the controls are in reach before starting it up. Just like when driving a vehicle, they should adjust the seat and mirrors as needed.

Viewing the Surrounding Area is Important

Safety tips when using forklifts isn't just for the driver, but the surrounding workers and pedestrians as well. When operating a forklift, the operator must always know the work site and who is around when they are using it. They should avoid going too fast, because this could cause them to miss people that might be in the way. They need to be sure the equipment is only operated through the designated roadways on the construction site or in the warehouse. There should be signs to explain proper clearance heights and floor loadings as well. Their mirrors will help them determine if someone might be in the way, and when they should wait for them to move.
